Jagannâth : The "Lord of the Universe", a name of Lord Krishnâ, one of the most famous and beloved Avatâra of Lord Vishnu. His worship in the largest Puri (Orissa) temple brings here millions pilgrims. Like His brother Balabhadra and His sister Subhadrâ who attend Him, He is represented by very rustic wood statue brighly painted
Jagamohan : hall or simple porch to shelter the temple visitors, devotees and pilgrims. This is the local name, in Orissa, for the mandapa, but it does not have pillars like south indian temples. In some cases, the jagamohan is large enough to form a second building attached to the main part of the temple (tower = shikhara). In that case, the corbelling roof has a pyramidal shape

Jaina, jainism : minor religion (about 3 million people) but with a strong cultural influence. Jainism, founded in the 6th century B.C., is marked by devotion towards the 24 Tirthankara (means "Those who help to cross fords"). The two latter Tirthankara were Parshvanâtha and Mahâvîra, i.e. "The Great Hero" (Prince Vardhamana), while the second lived circa the same period than Gautama Buddha.
Jainism recommends to reach Awakening thanks to complete ascetic life and non-violence (ahimsa), practice of a total respect for each form of life (even small animals like insects)

Jâlî : perforated stone wall closing the temple mandapa; the jâlî allows only a few light to enter. Were widely used in rajput and moghol monuments, the jâlî displays very nice decorative designs

Japa : litany repeated aloud or in a low voice, of a mantra

Jata : plait of hair worn by roving monks, similar to the Shiva's chignon. The jata-mukuta is a tall head-dress, made of plaited hair, typical of some Shiva statues

Jina Buddha : Jina means "The One who became the Master of his desires". In northern buddhism, the five Jina Buddha represent the five "forms", the five functions of Buddha. In a mandala : (1) the blue Akshobhya is located in the eastern side, (2) the yellow Ratnasambhava in south, (3) the red Amitâbha in west, (4) the green Amoghasiddhi in north, and (5) the white Vairochana in the zenith, symbolized by the mandala centre
